What has your journey with MAS been like so far?
It has been very diverse and exciting. There always seems to be projects going on as well as fun events sprinkled into the work that we do. It is very rewarding.
What made you choose a career in the Community Health Industry?
I chose to work in community health while I was in college. I went to school for Abnormal Psychology and began work as a BHP to gain more real-life experience with the community. It has led me to the current position that I have. In my new role I feel I get to advocate the work we do as well as find people who are looking for the fulfillment of giving back to the community through their work.
What was it like working for MAS while you were in school?
Working at MAS while I was in college was crucial to me being able to support myself while being in classes full time. The flexibility that per-diem work gave me made it easy for me to have a healthy academic, social, and work life.
What advice would you have for college students who are looking for that real world experience?
Get in the field! As well as try as many things as you can. You never know what will lead to bigger and better things in the future until you put yourself out there.
What do you think people need to know about working in the Community Health Industry?
Everyday is different! There are no two days that look the same. This, I think, is so wonderful because you can become a person who is constantly looking for the best in people and situations that you are faced with.
What is your favorite part of working with MAS Community Health?
My favorite part of working for MAS Community Health is that it is truly part of their community. Community Health is so important for everyone even if it does not feel like it directly impacts you and your life. It impacts everyone, and working as a community to improve our community is one of the most rewarding things I have had the opportunity to do.
If you could offer any advice to individuals looking for a career in Community Health, what would it be?
Do your research! There are so many areas of community health that you can be a part of. Finding the right area you want to further yourself in is crucial to being a positive impact on the community and community health in general. Part of doing your research is asking questions; if you don’t know, ask! Ask the questions, shadow the jobs you can see yourself in, do the research, and invest in what is right for you. This is something I wish I had done back in college and highly recommend for anyone interested in community health.
